When I consider the vastness of the stars or grains of sand or the multitude of animals, I can only say what a great God! Today is day four in this prayer series inspired by the Hymn “How Great Thou Art” written by Stuart K. Hine and put to a Swedish melody but inspired by Preacher Carl Boberg.
Growing up with both Khmer (Cambodian language) and English as dual immersion, I often heard the hymns first in Khmer. My parents love to sing and do special songs; they carry music in their hearts, and they have passed it on to me and I try to do the same for my children.
Here are the lyrics from https://www.hopepublishing.com/find-hymns-hw/hw4894.aspx:
1. O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed: Refrain Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art! How great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art! How great thou art! 2. When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze: Refrain 3. And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin. Refrain 4. When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then *I shall bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim, "My God, how great thou art!" Refrain Author's original words are "works," "mighty" and "shall I bow" (Word changes approved for use in North America.)
When we browse through scripture, we’ll find many passages declaring the greatness of God… I chose this one:
“Also Your righteousness, O God, is very high, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You?”
Psalms 71:19 NKJV; https://bible.com/bible/114/psa.71.19.NKJV
The things I bring before God is my being, my worth and value in God.
Lord, I come before you remember what a mighty and great God you are. With mere words, mighty and great sound repetitive, yet they don’t truly measure your awesomeness. All things exist by you and through you and for you. How great thou art! Truly. And Lord, as I reflect on your majesty, I’m reminded that I am made in your image. I am human but I have worth. I am worthy because of Jesus. I praise you God for my life here on earth now and I look forward with hopeful expectation with a forever life in heaven with you. Let my soul sing of your greatness! I pray that I will remember daily how great you are and may reverence for your majesty be wind for my sails. Let me live a life worthy of your calling. May my roots sink deep into you and your word, the Bible. Amen.
