Day 10 of Black History Month

February is a good month of connection and learning. Today, I’m looking at words in music. I took a little look into African Hymns and the soul and the anguish and the hope…

A few songs you can look up are:

  • “Follow the Drinkin’ Gourd”
  • “Go Down Moses”
  • “Let Us Break Bread Together”
  • “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”
  • “Steal Away (To Jesus)”
  • “Wade in the Water”
  • “Song of the Free”

These are labeled as “Songs of the Underground Railroad”

Like colorful brushstrokes on a canvas, cultures across the world have unique traditions and view points. I love seeing many colors and ethnicities come together.

My personal story: About three years ago, I hit a depression (it hit during pregnancy in 2017) and morphed into postpartum depression. The days were so gloomy and dark. I often described the feelings of a fan on the highest setting positioned at me and flowing at my face or the feeling of ants crawling all over. Depression was awful; for me, physically, as I began skimping sleep and the culmination of having four kids every other year began on top of working and volunteering wore me down. Yet, I remember discovering this song and it filled me… I am so thankful today to introduce to those who have not yet heard this song or of Tasha Cobbs Leonard… Tasha is a beautiful singer and is a lovely, God-loving, church-loving, black woman. I’d like to share her soulful song for Black History Month. The anchor of truths in this song carried me through my depression and I believe it will continue to impact many for generations.

lyrics:

He knows my name
Yes, he knows my name
He knows my name
Yes, he knows my nameAnd oh, how he walks with me
Yes oh, how he talks with me
And oh how he tells me
That I am his ownYou know my name
You know my name
You know my name
You know my nameAnd oh how you comfort me
And oh how you counsel me
Yet it still amazes me
That I am your friendSo now
I pour out
My heart to you
Here in
Your presence
I am made newSo now
I pour out
My heart to you
Here in
Your presence
I am made newYou know my name
You know my name
You know my name
Said you know my name (you know my name)And oh how you walk with me
Oh how you talk with me (you talk with me)
Oh how you tell me
I am your ownOh you got to know me
So I trust you with my life, yeahNo, no fire can burn me
No battle can turn me
No mountain can stop me
Cause you hold my handAnd now I’m walking in your victory
Cause your power is within me
No giant can defeat me
Cause you hold my handNo fire can burn me
No battle can turn me
No mountain can stop me
All because (you hold my hand)Oh and I’m walking, yeah, in your victory
Cause your power, it lives within me
No giant can defeat me
You hold my handI said no fire can burn me
No battle, it’s already won
No mountain can stop me (not gonna stop me)
Cause you hold my hand (’cause you hold my hand)Now I’m walking in your victory
Cause your power it lives within me
No giant can defeat me
You hold my hand (’cause you hold my hand)You hold my hand (you hold my hand)
To be afraid, no (you hold my hand)
I don’t have to be afraid, no (you hold my hand)I don’t have to be afraid (you hold my hand)
You hold my hand (you hold my hand)
You hold my hand (you hold my hand)
I’m so in love with you (you hold my hand)I’m so in love with you (you hold my hand)
You hold my hand (you hold my hand)
Oh (you hold my hand)
You hold my hand (you hold my hand)
You babe (you hold my hand)You know my name
You know my name, sing
You know my name
You know my nameOh how you walk with me
Oh how you walk with me
I’m in love with you, Lord
Oh how you talk with me
Just to commune with youOh how you tell me I belong to you
That I am your own

Friends, I hope you know that on your darkest and loneliest day, you will know that you are never alone. The God who created the universe holds all things together he also knows about you.

The Bible says…

Luke 12:7 "Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are far more valuable than many sparrows."

God, who created all the universe, he knows you… he knows your name. He is with you…

My prayer for you is that you would know… God as your personal friend and Savior. I pray that you would experience his goodness, love and faithfulness.

Life can be full of hope and abundance; I am certain we can find it because the life we want and desire: Jesus came to give us life and we can have it abundantly! A little about me: I am a wife, first. Next, I am a mama to five children; my husband and I have four daughters and son! I love to connect and talk about things of God and look for beauty in life.
